HAWAIʻI 78

ABOUT THIS VIDEO

40 years after this timeless classic was composed by a young Hawaiian in High School, we invited 1,000 youth, artists & collaborators across 4 islands to pull together their time, mana & resources - to record & film this song, live on location @ 29 scenes, each with its own story.

This video was produced to spread the message of aloha aina and raise awareness and support for the Mana Mele Project, where youth learn their ABCʻs - Academics, Business & Culture, through music, engineering, and video production.

HAWAIʻI 78 LYRICS

Oli

Ua Mau (2x)

If just for a day our queen and king

Would visit all the islands and saw everything

How would they feel about the changes of our land

Can you just imagine if they were around

And saw highways on their sacred ground

How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each others’ eyes

As they would stop to realize

That our people are in great, great danger now

How would they feel

Would they smile be content or just cry

Cry for the gods cry for the people

Cry for the land that was taken away

And then bid goodbye Hawaiʻi

Can you just imagine if they came back

And saw traffic lights and railroad tracks

How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each others’ eyes

As they would stop to realize

That our land is in great, great danger now

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawaiʻi x2

All the giving that the queen had done

She gave all her love to everyone

How would she feel if she saw Hawaiʻi nei

How would they feel

Would they smile be content or just cry

Cry for the gods cry for the people

Cry for the land that was taken away

And then yet you'll find Hawaiʻi nei

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawaiʻi x4
